Fes Medina Guided Tour: Madrasas, Tanneries and the Royal Palace

Explore Fes el-Bali with an official guide: madrasas, the Chouara tannery, the Mellah, the Royal Palace gates and a sunset view from the Merinid Tombs.

  • 1 day
  • Fes
  • Private
  • From TT$ 344 (€45) per person

Overview

The old medina of Fes is a labyrinth of thousands of alleys, many too narrow for a donkey to turn around. You can wander it alone, but you will miss most of its secrets. This private Fes medina guided tour pairs you with an official, licensed guide who walks you through Fes el-Bali, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the largest car-free urban areas on Earth.

In one day you see the blue gate of Bab Bou Jeloud, the carved cedar and stucco of the Bou Inania and Al-Attarine madrasas, the doorways of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859, and the colorful dye pits of the Chouara tannery. Then you cross to the Mellah, the historic Jewish quarter, and the golden gates of the Royal Palace before ending at the Merinid Tombs viewpoint above the city.

Your guide adapts the pace and the stops to you, whether you are into history, crafts, food or photography. Price per person drops as your group grows, from €70 for a solo traveler to €20 each for a group of eight.

Before your Fes medina guided tour

Wear comfortable, broken-in shoes: you will walk several hours on uneven paving and slopes. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, and carry small dirham notes for entrance fees, tea and taxis. The tannery has a strong smell; you will usually be offered a sprig of mint to hold under your nose.

Your guide can visit artisans' workshops if you wish, but there is no obligation to buy. Want to learn the art of bargaining first? Read how to haggle in the souks. For a day outside the city, try our Volubilis and Meknes day trip.

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Non-Muslims cannot enter the mosque, but you can see the courtyard and its tiles from the open doorways. Your guide explains its history as one of the oldest continuously operating places of learning in the world.
