Merzouga Luxury Desert Camp: Camel Trek, Sunset and a Night in Erg Chebbi

Already in Merzouga? Ride into Erg Chebbi at sunset, sleep in a luxury tent with a private bathroom and wake up to sunrise over the dunes.

  • Merzouga
  • Private
  • From TT$ 2,101 (€275) per person

Overview

This private two-day experience starts and ends in Merzouga and has one goal: the perfect night in the Sahara. You ride a camel into the dunes of Erg Chebbi as the sun goes down and spend the night at a Merzouga luxury desert camp, with a spacious tent, a real bed, a private bathroom and a dinner served by candlelight.

After dinner, the camp staff bring out the drums and the fire, and then the best show begins: a sky so dark you can see the Milky Way with your bare eyes on clear, moonless nights. In the morning, climb a dune to watch the sunrise, enjoy breakfast and try sandboarding before riding back to the village.

It is ideal if you are traveling Morocco on your own or by bus or rental car, or if you want to add a premium desert night to a longer route. Couples love it, and it pairs beautifully with our 4×4 tour around Erg Chebbi for a fuller stay.

Highlights

  • Sunset camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes
  • Luxury tent with private bathroom and real beds
  • Candlelit dinner, Berber drums and campfire
  • Stargazing far from any city lights
  • Sunrise from the top of a dune
  • Optional sandboarding

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Merzouga – Camel Trek – Luxury Camp in Erg Chebbi

Meet your team in Merzouga in the afternoon, about two hours before sunset. Leave your large luggage in a safe place and keep a small bag for the night. Mount your camel and follow your cameleer into the dunes, a ride of about one hour across ridges of orange sand.

Stop on a high dune for sunset, then continue to the luxury camp. Check into your tent, freshen up and enjoy mint tea. Dinner is a feast of Moroccan salads, tagine or couscous and fruit. Afterward, gather around the fire for drums and songs, then lie back and look up: shooting stars are common.

Overnight: Luxury desert camp, Erg Chebbi Meals: Dinner

  2. Day 2 Sunrise on the Dunes – Sandboarding – Merzouga

An early knock on the tent: it is time for sunrise. Climb the nearest high dune with a blanket or a coffee and watch the light sweep across the sand and the shadows shrink.

Back at camp, enjoy breakfast with fresh bread, eggs, honey and jam. If you feel like it, grab a board and try sandboarding down the slopes, which is easier than it looks and great fun for kids. Then ride the camels back to Merzouga, arriving mid-morning. End of the experience, with time to continue your trip or rest in the village.

Good to know at the Merzouga luxury desert camp

Bring a small backpack with a warm layer, a scarf or buff for the wind, sunglasses, sunscreen and a phone charger (camps usually have charging points). From November to March, nights can drop close to freezing; tents have thick blankets and heaters may be available.

The camel ride is gentle but bumpy; long pants make it more comfortable. If you prefer not to ride, a 4x4 transfer to the camp can be arranged. Want to arrive from Marrakech with a driver? Consider the 3-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour instead.

What our travelers say

Highly recommended!

We had an amazing 4-day overland trip from Fes to Marrakech with Morocco Excursions, and I can’t recommend this company highly enough — especially our guide and driver, Hassan. From the moment he picked us up, we felt completely safe and taken care of. Hassan is a fantastic driver — something we appreciated even more after meeting other t…

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

How do I get to Merzouga?

By private transfer, rental car or long-distance bus from Fes or Marrakech. The trip takes about 7 to 9 hours. We can also include the drive in a private tour from either city.

Does the luxury camp have showers and toilets?

Yes. Each luxury tent has a private bathroom with a shower and a flush toilet. Hot water depends on the camp's solar system, so it is best in the afternoon.

Is it safe to sleep in the desert?

Yes. Camps are run by local teams who stay on site all night. You are a short drive from Merzouga village, and staff are used to welcoming families and solo travelers.

Can we stay two nights?

Of course. A second night lets you add a 4x4 tour or simply relax. Ask when booking and we will adjust the price.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
