7-Day Tangier to Marrakech Tour via Chefchaouen, Fes and the Sahara

Cross Morocco from north to south in one private week: Chefchaouen, Fes, the Merzouga dunes, the kasbah road and Marrakech.

  • 7 days
  • Tangier → Marrakech
  • Private
  • From TT$ 6,914 (€905) per person

Overview

This 7-day Tangier to Marrakech tour crosses the whole country, from the Strait of Gibraltar to the red city at the foot of the Atlas. It is the classic route for travelers who arrive in the north, by ferry from Spain or by train from Casablanca, and want to fly home from Marrakech without retracing their steps.

In one week you see the blue town of Chefchaouen, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, imperial Meknes and a guided day in the medieval medina of Fes. Then you cross the Middle Atlas to the Sahara for a camel trek and a night in a desert camp at Erg Chebbi, follow the gorges of Todra and Dades, visit the ksar of Aït Benhaddou and finish with a guided tour of Marrakech.

Your English-speaking driver stays with you all the way, in a private vehicle for up to seven travelers. Have two more days? The 9-day Morocco tour from Tangier adds a free day in Chefchaouen and a full day in the desert.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Tangier – Chefchaouen

Pickup at your Tangier hotel, the ferry port or the train station. Drive south through the green hills of the north, with an optional coffee stop in Tetouan, and climb into the Rif mountains to Chefchaouen. The drive takes about two to two and a half hours. Check in to your riad and spend the afternoon exploring the blue lanes, the Outa el Hammam square and the kasbah garden. Before dinner, walk up to the Spanish Mosque to watch the sun set over the town and the valley.

Overnight: Riad in Chefchaouen Meals: Dinner

  2. Day 2 Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fes

Take an early walk for photos while the lanes are empty, then drive south into olive country. Visit Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman site in Morocco, with mosaic floors, columns and a triumphal arch looking over the plain. Continue to Meknes, the imperial city of Moulay Ismail, to see the Bab Mansour gate and El Hedim square. Reach Fes in the early evening and check in to your riad for dinner. A long but varied day, with stops whenever you want them.

Overnight: Riad in Fes Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  3. Day 3 Fes guided visit

Meet your local guide for a full day in Fes el-Bali, the old walled medina and a UNESCO site. Pass through Bab Boujloud, explore the Bou Inania madrasa and the Nejjarine fountain, glimpse the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university from its doorway and watch the dyers of the Chouara tannery from a terrace above. Visit workshops of coppersmiths, weavers and potters. In the afternoon, see the royal palace gates and the panoramic view of the city from the hills. Evening at leisure.

Overnight: Riad in Fes Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  4. Day 4 Fes – Merzouga, desert camp

Set off early for the Sahara. Cross the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and the cedar forests, where Barbary macaques often come close to the road. After lunch in Midelt, the landscape turns dry and dramatic as you follow the Ziz Valley and its canyon of palm trees. In the late afternoon, reach Merzouga, climb on a camel and ride over the dunes of Erg Chebbi to watch the sunset. Dinner, music around the fire and the night in a desert camp.

Overnight: Desert camp in Merzouga Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  5. Day 5 Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades

Climb a dune for sunrise, then ride back to Merzouga for breakfast and a shower. Drive west through Rissani, Erfoud and the oasis of Tinjdad to Tinghir, where a palm grove spreads below earthen villages. Walk into the Todra Gorge, where limestone walls around 300 meters high close in over a clear stream. After lunch, continue to the Dades Valley, known for its rock formations and winding road. Dinner and the night with views over the valley. Your driver can stop at a Berber family's home for mint tea along the way.

Overnight: Hotel or guesthouse in the Dades Valley Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  6. Day 6 Dades – Aït Benhaddou – Marrakech

Follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Rose Valley and Skoura to Ouarzazate. Visit Aït Benhaddou, a fortified earthen village listed by UNESCO and seen in many films and series; climb to the old granary for the view. After lunch, cross the High Atlas over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at about 2,260 meters, with stops at viewpoints and Berber villages. Arrive in Marrakech in the early evening and check in to your riad near the medina. On the descent, stop at a women's argan oil cooperative if you like.

Overnight: Riad in Marrakech Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  7. Day 7 Marrakech guided visit, end of tour

Spend the morning with a local guide in Marrakech: the Koutoubia mosque, the Bahia Palace with its painted ceilings, the Saadian tombs and the souks of the medina, where each lane belongs to a craft. Your guide shares tips on bargaining fairly and on where to taste street food. The tour ends after the visit, leaving you free to enjoy Jemaa el-Fna square as it fills with musicians and food stalls at dusk. Airport transfer or extra nights on request.

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

How do we get to Tangier from the US or the Caribbean?

The simplest routes are a nonstop to Casablanca followed by the high-speed train to Tangier, or a flight via Madrid, which also lets you take the ferry from Tarifa. We can meet you at the station, port or airport.

Can we end the tour in Casablanca for our flight home?

Yes. We can add a transfer from Marrakech to Casablanca or Mohammed V Airport, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road. Ask when you book.

Is one night in the desert enough?

It gives you sunset, a night in camp and sunrise, which is the essence of the experience. If you want a full day in the dunes, choose the 9-day tour from Tangier.

How is the price calculated?

Your group shares the cost of the private vehicle and driver, and accommodation is charged per person per night. The more travelers, up to seven, the lower the price per person.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
