3 Day Marrakech to Fes Desert Tour via Merzouga

Cross Morocco from Marrakech to Fes in three days, with a camel trek and a night in a Sahara camp in between. Shared minibus, daily departures, €165 per person.

  • 3 days
  • Marrakech → Fes
  • Small group
  • From TT$ 1,261 (€165) per person

Overview

Flying into Marrakech and out of Fes, or the other way round? Our 3 day Marrakech to Fes desert tour turns the transfer between the two cities into the highlight of your trip. Instead of a long train ride through the plains, you cross the High Atlas, visit Aït Benhaddou, sleep in the Dades Gorge and spend a night in a Berber camp among the dunes of Erg Chebbi before arriving in Fes.

The final day takes the northern route out of the desert: up the Ziz Valley with its palm-filled canyon, across the Middle Atlas via the apple town of Midelt and the alpine-style resort of Ifrane, and down into Fes in the evening. You see two very different Moroccos in a single trip, from red desert to cedar forest.

It is a shared small-group tour, up to 17 travelers in an air-conditioned minibus, with a fixed price of €165 per person and departures every day. Once you arrive, a guided walk through the Fes medina is the perfect next step. If you need to end back in Marrakech, book the 3 day desert tour from Marrakech instead.

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Marrakech – Tizi n'Tichka – Aït Benhaddou – Ouarzazate – Dades

Morning pickup in Marrakech. The minibus climbs through the High Atlas, with stops for photos of Berber villages and the views from the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m. Descend to Aït Benhaddou, the fortified village of earthen houses listed by UNESCO, and walk up through its lanes to the granary for a sweeping view. After a lunch break (not included), continue past Ouarzazate and along the valley of a thousand kasbahs, through Skoura and Kelaat M'Gouna, to the Dades Valley. You arrive in the late afternoon for dinner and a night at a hotel in the gorge.

Overnight: Hotel in the Dades Gorge Meals: Dinner

  2. Day 2 Dades – Todra Gorge – Merzouga, camel trek and desert camp

After breakfast, drive to Tinghir and walk into the Todra Gorge, where cliffs up to 300 m tall leave just enough room for a stream and a road. Back on the bus, the scenery turns to flat, stony desert as you pass Tinejdad and Erfoud on the way to Merzouga. In the late afternoon your camels are waiting at the edge of Erg Chebbi. Ride about an hour into the dunes, climb one for sunset and walk down to your Berber camp. Dinner is served in the camp, followed by drums around the fire and a night sky with almost no light pollution.

Overnight: Desert camp in Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  3. Day 3 Merzouga – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Ifrane – Fes

Catch sunrise from the dunes, ride back to Merzouga and have breakfast. Today is a long drive of around 8 to 9 hours with stops. You head north through Erfoud and Errachidia into the Ziz Valley, a deep canyon lined with thousands of palm trees, with a viewpoint stop over the oasis. Climb onto the plateau to Midelt, known for its apples and its views of the Jebel Ayachi, then cross the Middle Atlas to Ifrane, a tidy mountain town with sloping roofs and gardens. The last stretch descends to Fes, where we drop you at your riad or hotel in the evening.

Overnight: — (tour ends in Fes) Meals: Breakfast

Good to know before your 3 day Marrakech to Fes desert tour

Pickup: around 7:00 a.m. in Marrakech. Riads in car-free lanes are met at the nearest square. In Fes, we drop you at your hotel or at the closest medina gate, usually between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m., so plan your first Fes dinner nearby.

Luggage: because this is a one-way trip, your main suitcase travels with you in the minibus. Pack a small overnight bag for the camp.

What to bring: warm layers (the Middle Atlas and the desert at night are cold from October to April), sunglasses, a scarf, sunscreen and dirhams for lunches and tips.

Who it suits: travelers flying in and out of different cities, budget travelers and solo travelers. With long driving days on days 1 and 3, it suits those who are happy to watch the landscape roll by.

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

What does traveling in a shared minibus mean?

You join other travelers, up to a maximum of 17, in an air-conditioned minibus. The itinerary, timings and accommodation are the same for everyone, which keeps the price low.

Is the €165 price per person fixed?

Yes. It is about US$185 as of October 2026 and does not change with the number of people. Pay a deposit online with PayPal and the rest on arrival.

Can I do the route the other way, from Fes to Marrakech?

Yes. We run the reverse route every day too; see our 3-day Fes to Marrakech desert tour.

I'm traveling alone. Do I pay more?

Not unless you want your own room. Solo travelers share a twin room with another traveler of the same gender where possible, or pay a single supplement, quoted on request.

Can I bring a large suitcase?

Yes, one standard suitcase per person stays in the minibus. You only carry a small bag to the desert camp.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
