4 Day Desert Tour from Fes: Merzouga, Nomads and the Middle Atlas

A gentle round trip from Fes: two nights in Merzouga, a night in Midelt and the Azrou cedars on the way home. Shared minibus, daily departures, €240 per person.

  • 4 days
  • Fes
  • Small group
  • From TT$ 1,834 (€240) per person

Overview

The 4 day desert tour from Fes is our slow-paced alternative to the 3-day loop. Instead of a long drive straight back to Fes, the return journey is split with a night in Midelt, so no single day feels like a marathon and you have time to enjoy the Middle Atlas on the way home.

You arrive in Merzouga on the first evening and sleep in a hotel at the foot of the dunes. Day two is all about the desert: visit Khamlia and its Gnawa musicians, meet nomad families who live around Erg Chebbi, then ride a camel into the dunes for sunset and a night in a Berber camp. On day three you pass through Rissani, Erfoud and the Ziz Valley to Midelt, and on day four you drive through the cedar forest of Azrou and the resort town of Ifrane back to Fes.

Up to 17 travelers share an air-conditioned minibus, the price is fixed at €240 per person and we leave Fes every day. Back in the city, add a day trip to Volubilis and Meknes to round off your stay.

Highlights

  • Two nights in Merzouga: a hotel at the dunes and a Berber camp
  • Visit to nomad families and the Gnawa village of Khamlia
  • Camel trek into Erg Chebbi at sunset
  • Rissani souk and Erfoud fossil workshops
  • Overnight in Midelt to break the drive
  • Azrou cedar forest and Ifrane on the way back

Itinerary

  1. Day 1 Fes – Ifrane – Midelt – Merzouga

We pick you up in Fes in the morning and drive south into the Middle Atlas. The first stop is Ifrane, a tidy mountain resort of red roofs and parks that locals call the Switzerland of Morocco. Continue across cedar-covered hills and open plateaus to Midelt for lunch (not included), with the Jebel Ayachi range on the horizon. In the afternoon, the road drops into the Ziz Valley, a dramatic canyon of palms, and on through Errachidia and Erfoud to Merzouga. Check in at your hotel at the foot of the dunes in time to watch the sunset over Erg Chebbi.

Overnight: Hotel in Merzouga Meals: Dinner

  2. Day 2 Merzouga: Khamlia, nomads, camel sunset and desert camp

A slow morning after breakfast, then explore the desert around Erg Chebbi. Visit Khamlia, a village where families of Gnawa musicians perform their trance-like music over mint tea, and meet a nomad family living in the open desert to learn how they move with their herds. There is time to relax at the hotel or pool during the hot hours. In the late afternoon, mount your camel and ride about an hour into the dunes. Watch the sunset from the top of a crest, then settle into the Berber camp for dinner, drums around the fire and a starry night.

Overnight: Desert camp in Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  3. Day 3 Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Ziz Valley – Midelt

Wake for sunrise, ride back by camel and have breakfast in Merzouga. Drive first to Rissani, the historic capital of the Tafilalet, to stroll its souk and see the gate and old ksour. Continue to Erfoud, where workshops cut and polish fossil-rich marble into tables and souvenirs. After lunch (not included), follow the Ziz Valley north, with a stop at a viewpoint over the palm-filled gorge, then climb to Midelt on the high plateau between the Middle and High Atlas. Arrive in the late afternoon, with time to rest before dinner at your hotel.

Overnight: Hotel in Midelt Meals: Breakfast, dinner

  4. Day 4 Midelt – Azrou cedar forest – Ifrane – Fes

After breakfast, an easy drive of about 4 hours brings you back to Fes. On the way, stop in the cedar forest near Azrou, some of the finest Atlas cedars in Morocco, where Barbary macaques often appear near the road. Continue to Ifrane for a coffee break and a walk around its lake and gardens. Descend through farmland to Fes, arriving early in the afternoon, with drop-off at your riad, hotel or the nearest medina gate. You still have time for an afternoon in the medina or to catch an evening train or flight.

Overnight: — (tour ends in Fes) Meals: Breakfast

Moroccan journey

My family and I planned our own 10-day itinerary in Morocco. We hired a car with a driver to travel with us and enjoy everything Morocco has to offer. Salem, our driver, was a great person: kind, always available, and not just our driver — he suggested things to do, places to see and where to stay, and explained his traditions and culture…

Frequently asked questions

What is a shared minibus tour?

You join other travelers, up to 17, in an air-conditioned minibus. Everyone shares the same itinerary, timings, hotels and camp, which keeps the price low.

Is the €240 price fixed?

Yes. It is about US$270 as of October 2026 and stays the same whether there are 4 or 17 people. Book with a PayPal deposit and pay the balance on arrival.

How is this different from the 3-day tour from Fes?

The 3-day tour drives straight back to Fes on day 3. The 4-day tour breaks the return with a night in Midelt and adds Erfoud and the Azrou cedar forest.

Is there a single supplement?

Yes, on request. Otherwise solo travelers share a twin room with another traveler of the same gender where possible.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes. The shorter driving days make it one of our easiest desert tours for families. Children usually love the camel ride and the camp.

Any questions about this tour?

Send us a message, no commitment: we reply personally, usually within 24 hours. We can also adapt the route to your dates.
