When Is the Best Time to Visit Morocco? Month by Month, Region by Region

Spring and fall are the sweet spots, but every month works somewhere in Morocco. Here is where to go when, with festival dates and Ramadan 2027.

The best time to visit Morocco for most travelers is spring (March to May) or fall (late September to November). Days are warm, nights are comfortable, and you can combine the cities, the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara in one trip without melting or freezing. But Morocco is a big country with mountains, desert and two coastlines, so “best” depends on where you want to go and what you want to do. Coming from the Caribbean, you already know heat. What surprises our Jamaican and Trinidadian guests is the cold: a December night in the desert can drop close to freezing.

Temperatures below are typical daytime highs in Marrakech, which is a good reference for inland Morocco. The coast is milder, the mountains cooler and the desert more extreme.

Best time by region

Sahara Desert (Merzouga, Zagora)

The ideal windows are March to May and October to November: warm afternoons on the dunes and pleasant nights at camp. From December to February, sunsets are spectacular and the sky is crystal clear, but bring a real jacket and expect night temperatures near 32°F. Avoid June to August if you can. Midday heat is brutal and camel rides move to early morning and late evening. Our 3-day desert tour from Marrakech runs all year, and we adapt timings to the season.

Atlas Mountains

Summer is the best season for hiking around Imlil and Toubkal, when valleys stay fresh even while Marrakech bakes. In winter the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) can see snow and occasional short closures, so leave a buffer day in your plans. Spring brings waterfalls and blossoms in the Ourika Valley.

Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir, Asilah)

The coast is a year-round option and the best escape in July and August. Essaouira is cooled by strong trade winds, which kitesurfers love and sunbathers sometimes do not. Do not expect Caribbean water temperatures: the Atlantic here is chilly, around 64–72°F even in summer.

Imperial cities (Marrakech, Fes, Rabat, Meknes)

Spring and fall are perfect for walking the medinas. Fes and Meknes are cooler and wetter in winter, with rain most likely from November to March. Marrakech in July is doable if you sightsee early, rest at midday and head out again after 5 pm.

Festivals and events worth planning around

Festival dates move each year. These are the 2026 dates as of October 2026. Dates for 2027 had not been announced yet.

  • Fes Festival of World Sacred Music: June 4–7, 2026
  • Gnaoua World Music Festival, Essaouira: June 25–27, 2026. Our Essaouira day trip from Marrakech is a good way in.
  • Marrakech Popular Arts Festival: July 2–6, 2026
  • Imilchil Marriage Moussem (High Atlas): October 1–3, 2026
  • Tan-Tan Moussem: October 30 to November 3, 2026
  • Erfoud Date Festival: usually late October or November. The 2026 dates were unconfirmed at the time of writing.

Traveling during Ramadan

Ramadan follows the lunar calendar and moves about 11 days earlier each year. In 2027 it is expected to start around February 8 or 9 and end around March 9 or 10, with Eid al-Fitr right after. Final dates depend on the moon sighting. Morocco also switches its clocks back one hour (to UTC+0) during Ramadan, so double-check pickup times. In 2026 the change ran from February 15 to March 22.

Visiting during Ramadan is absolutely possible. Sights stay open, though hours may be shorter. Many cafés close during the day outside tourist areas, and the evening ftour (breaking the fast) creates a festive atmosphere you will not see at other times. Avoid eating, drinking or smoking openly in the street during daylight. Read more in our guide to traveling during Ramadan.

A heads-up for Trinidadians: Carnival Monday and Tuesday 2027 fall on February 8 and 9, the same days Ramadan is expected to begin. If you want to play mas and then fly to Morocco, you would arrive in the first week of Ramadan. That is calm and very atmospheric, but different from a regular week.

Which season fits your trip?

  • First trip, cities plus desert: April, May, October or November.
  • Honeymoon: October and spring for warm camp nights. Winter for cozy riads and fireplaces.
  • Family with school holidays: Spring break or Thanksgiving week work well. In summer, stick to the coast and mountains.
  • Budget: January (outside the New Year rush), early February and late November usually bring better riad rates.
  • Photography: October to February for clear skies and long golden light. Winter nights are best for stars.

For high season, book your tour and riads two to three months ahead, especially around Easter and the Christmas holidays, when travelers from Europe arrive in large numbers. Prefer a social trip? Our shared small-group desert tours depart throughout the year at a fixed price per person.

What the weather means for your suitcase

Coming from 85°F Kingston or Port of Spain, it is tempting to pack only summer clothes. Do not. Even in May or October you will want a fleece or light down jacket for the desert camp and the Atlas pass, while lightweight, loose clothing covers the days. In winter, add a warm hat, a scarf and thicker socks. Riads are beautiful but not always well heated. In summer, think breathable linen, a wide-brimmed hat and a scarf to shield you from sun and sand. Our full seasonal list, with notes for women and men, is in what to wear in Morocco.

Rain is rarely a trip-breaker. Most of it falls between November and March in the north (Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes), usually as passing showers. The south and the desert stay dry most of the year, although rare autumn storms can cause flash floods in the valleys. That is another good reason to travel with a driver who knows the roads.

Timing tips for travelers from the US and the Caribbean

Morocco is 5 hours ahead of Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago, and 6 hours ahead of Jamaica. Relative to the US East Coast it is 5 or 6 hours ahead, depending on daylight saving time. Overnight flights land in Casablanca in the morning. Plan a light first day, and do not schedule the long drive over the Atlas within hours of landing. Airfares from New York and Miami usually peak in summer and around Christmas, so spring and fall often mean better prices as well as better weather.
